DOSE - The Social Influences
There are 4 brain hormones that are pretty interesting in how we behave and what it does to us. I am trying to write a gist by collecting information from the 4 part YouTube series with Ali Abdaal ft Tj Power and from the book Leaders Eat Last by Simon Sinek
Selfish hormones- Dopamine and Endorphins
Dopamine give us the sence of satisfaction, a kick when we complete something. This was needed for the primitive-humans aka Hunter-gatherers to get that kick when they have a successful hunt. Interestingly, this is the same chemical you get when you endlesslely scroll reels or shorts. These are needed as well, this is the harmones that makes you happy when you complete a task reach a goal. This help YOU as an individual hunger for quest of success.
Endorphins aka happy-pain harmones. Endorphins are hormones that the body releases to help with pain and create a feeling of well-being. They are also known as “feel-good” chemicals. These were needed for the hunter-gatherer to make the painful process of getting food an enjoyable one. This is the hormone responsible for making a marathon runner happy even though his body is hurting. The runner’s high as it is called.
Selfless hormones- Oxytocin and Serotonin
Oxytocins are also known as the love hormone. This is the reason why we feel happy being with someone. Help create bonds with others. Humans are social beings because of this. This has helped in the reproduction and evolution of our species. Oxytocins are responsible for why we feel happy after we help someone.
Serotonin- Is responsible for making you feel good. This is also called a leadership chemical because it makes us feel proud, strong, and confident.
How they influence in team culture
Serotonin and Oxytocin grease the social machine. And when they are missing friction results. When leaders of an organisation create a culture that inhibits the release of these chemicals, it is tantamount to sabotage– sabotage of our careers and our happiness and sabotage of success of the organisation itself. The strength of the culture determines an organisation’s ability to adapt to times over come the adversity and pioneer new innovations. When the conditions are right, when a strong circle of safety is present and felt by all, we do what we do the best. We act in the manner for which we are designed. We pull together.
